What is a 24Genetics DNA test like?
Our DNA test It's a simple test that anyone can perform at home. We ship a kit anywhere in the world, and the customer simply deposits a saliva sample in a tube and returns it to our offices.
From there:
- We extract the DNA from the saliva sample.
- We transform the biological data contained in DNA into computer data, through a process called sequencing .
- And we apply to that computer data the algorithms developed exclusively by us, allowing us to obtain a personalized report.
Therefore, we combine purely biological processes with computer processes, so that, without losing an ounce of scientific rigor, we can process vast amounts of information and provide highly detailed reports.
We have what is possibly The widest range of genetic tests on the market : ancestry, health, nutrigenetics, pharmacogenetics, talent and personality, sports, and skin, each with dozens or hundreds of detailed traits, depending on the type of report.
Our algorithm
The 24Genetics algorithm is based on the analysis and study of thousands of publications (called “papers” in the scientific environment), contrasted, validated and recognized by the scientific community at an international level.
Thanks to the reliability of our ancestry test, the first step of our genetic analysis consists of identify sex and ancestry of each individual. From there, We apply only the studies that are appropriate for each profile . For example, to obtain the genetic report of a European woman, we do not use studies whose analyzed population has been exclusively male or Asian. And instead of applying a single study, what we do is combine a multitude of publications validated. Thus, we are able to apply all available scientific knowledge to calculate the different genetic predispositions.
With this, we win accuracy and reliability in our results
Content of our reports.
The information provided by our reports speaks of Predispositions . And what do we mean by this? Let's take an example. The likelihood of suffering from hypertension is influenced by multiple factors, which we could group into two groups: Genetic and environmental factors. Genetic factors determine our propensity to develop hypertension. Environmental factors, on the other hand, also include factors that affect it, such as diet, habits, stress levels, location, climate, age, etc. Whether or not we ultimately develop hypertension depends on the combination of both types of factors. And, although we may have a genetic predisposition to develop it, if we maintain a healthy weight, control our salt intake, keep stress under control, exercise, etc., we may never develop it. Or vice versa.
What do our genetic reports provide?
Our reports offer a wealth of scientifically validated information about predispositions and this allows us to know how the body works naturally and what aspects to pay attention to.
At 24Genetics, we always recommend consulting a healthcare professional to supplement our reports with your available medical and family history, or to prescribe additional diagnostic tests if necessary to confirm the risk of one or more specific predispositions.
