Some variants in the genome can directly affect the function or expression of genes involved in the metabolism of certain drugs. Therefore, alterations in the assimilation of a medication can directly determine the success or failure of a treatment, as well as its safety. One of the main objectives of pharmacogenetics is to develop therapies tailored to each individual based on their genetics, commonly known as personalized medicine or precision medicine.
