BRCA1 (breast cancer type 1) and BRCA2 (breast cancer type 2) are genes that produce proteins that repair damage to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Each person inherits two copies of each of these genes: one from the mother and one from the father. BRCA1 and BRCA2 are sometimes called tumor suppressor genes because when they have specific changes, called harmful (or pathogenic) variants (or mutations), cancer can develop.
People who inherit harmful variants in one of these genes have an increased risk of several types of cancer, especially breast and ovarian cancer. People who inherit a harmful variant in BRCA1 and BRCA2 also tend to develop cancer at a younger age than those who do not have these variants.
