An abnormal chromosome called the Philadelphia chromosome is associated with chronic myelogenous leukemia. Each of your cells contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, which are made of DNA and carry instructions for every cell in your body. The Philadelphia chromosome forms when chromosome 9 and chromosome 22 split and swap parts. This produces a small, abnormal chromosome 22 and a new combination of instructions for your cells, which can lead to chronic myelogenous leukemia.
